Punishing The Digital Age Kid

How do you send a kid to their room when their room is a gamers paradise? It’s an interesting dilemma and one that parents face these days more and more. There was a time when an electronic toy was a novelty and therefore when the kid got bad a parent could take it away and it would be the end of it. These days the electronics are not just a part of a child’s fun but they are a part of a child’s life. They use their computer for homework and to do papers. They have the cell phone in case of emergencies. So when a kid acts out and they need to be punished, a parent can’t always do the easy thing because taking away a cell phone could mean more work for them.

This doesn’t mean that a parent cannot lay down the law. The first thing that a parent needs to do when punishing a kid is remove the source of stimulation. Taking away their video gaming system is a great way for them to be punished and for them not to be able to sneak around and play it.

If a child has a cell phone you can ask to have it when they are in the house. A child might need it when they are out, but when they are home it will only serve to text and chat with friends. If they are being punished then they should be doing that anyway.

Internet use is tricky. Moving the computer out into the living room is a good way for you to control their usage. Also, limiting them to using it for school projects only will help them from surfing the Internet and from hanging out on social media sites.

Being a parent in the digital age isn’t easy. At the end of the day it comes back to enforcing punishment and sticking to that.

Appropriate Discipline For The Children

Being a parent is often a job without a review process. There are very few times when someone is there to check on the job a parent is doing. If mother or father has a spouse then there might be discussion about parenting styles or a critique of the way a situation was handled, but most of the time parents are making it up as they go along.

When a child is behaving themselves it’s easy to be a good parent. At that point it involves light monitoring. However, when a child is acting out or doing things worthy of a punishment then it’s when being a parent becomes difficult. These situations are also when a parent must do the right thing in disciplining their child. Every parent wants the punishment to impact their child but the punishment should fit the crime every time. It’s important not to go too hard on them but also not to let them feel like they got away with anything.

All punishments should be a means to correct bad behavior. If a child brings home a sub-standard report card then it should be up to the parent to take punishment that corrects the action. Simply taking a kids bike away from them might seem like a good punishment, but is that the reason that they were getting the poor grades? Perhaps taking away a cell phone or making them give up their computer for a few weeks will allow them to focus on doing their homework and studying.

The punishment should be meant to allow kids to fully understand that when they make mistakes that there are consequences for their actions. If the natural consequences(i.e Criminal charges) are enough then punishment might not be warranted. Sometimes it is ok not to punish at all, but it’s only good for situations in which the child appears to have learned their lesson. But a parent has to be trusting about that.

When To Allow Violent Video Games

Kids are introduced to gory, violent, and other adult themed video games as a regular part of life these days. There are many children out there who are seeing and playing violent video games that as a parent it might seem normal. The truth is that there is nothing normal about these games. Whether or not your children should play them is a decision that is completely up to you. Here are some helpful things to consider and do when it comes to the games your child is playing.

The first thing a parent should do is have a conversation before the video gaming system is even purchased. You must explain to the child that you are in control of what games get brought into the house. You will not tolerate games that you feel are inappropriate for them to be playing. This will make it clear from the beginning that the child will have rules and restrictions put on them when it comes to what they can and cannot play.

As they parent you have to do a little research when it comes to these games A rating of over 14 doesn’t always mean your child shouldn’t be allowed to play it. It’s up to you and your better judgment. But to be fair to the child you should be willing to go online and do a little reading about the game. See what the idea of the game is and make your determination from there. Many times you can even see online demos of the games before you allow your child to use it.

Of course as a parent you must be consistent. Having them avoid violent video games but allowing them to watch violent is a conflict in style. Either you should make clear why you are allowing one and not the other, or you should be consistent on both both fronts. You are in charge, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be fair.

The Peer Pressure of Playing Games

Video games these days are changing in not only the nature of the way they played, but in the way they are advertised as well and as a parent it might be causing a little bit of controversy of the home. The rumor is true that video games are not just a niche market anymore. These video games are selling bigger than the hottest music stars are today. The games are exploding in popularity and the Internet community is making an effort to capitalize off the investment.

Many parents think that kids are into the games for the violence of it all, but the truth is there is a lot more social pressure to play these games than ever before. Kids these days are feeling the heat from friends and classmates alike in order to fit in. If a kid doesn’t have the newest game system or doesn’t have the newest edition than he is often looked at by his friends as someone who isn’t a part of the social norm. This is a negative factor for the kid and one that he will try to erase by acquiring the game any way they can. Even if that means stealing the game or hiding it from the parents.

With the use of the Internet on these gaming systems it is making it even harder for these kids to resist the temptation to play. There are now gaming rooms online where kids can play the game and chat with one another from the comfort of their own homes. If a kid is not on this chat it is as if he isn’t part of the social network. It’s like having all of his friends on Facebook and not having a Facebook page. The kid will feel left out by a community who is bounding without them. This doesn’t justify getting a kid a violent video game but it does explain their extra motivation to play the game.

Questions To Ask About Punishments

Punishing your child is not a science, but rather an art form. There is no definitive punishment for your child’s behavior. Whether your child is acting out at school or hitting their sibling, there is no one punishment that fits any particular crime. For a parent this will make things tricky. The last thing a parent wants to do is to let their kid get away with bad behavior, or more importantly, get off easy with bad behavior. This means that a parent must be thoughtful and careful about the punishment they hand out. Here are a few things to thing about when it comes to the kind of punishment they give out to their kids.

Is It Fair?

This is not always easy, but there is a biblical line to these punishments. If a child gets bad marks in school, then locking them in their room will be an unfair punishment as it is certainly cruel. However if the reason for their punishment is they have been having too much fun and not doing enough studying then removing their gaming system or taking the car away from them will be an appropriate punishment. The length of the punishment should be appropriate with the time it might take to prove their is a correction of actions.

Will It Deter Them From Doing It Again?

This goes back to the idea that the penal system has. Just giving out a punishment that won’t make child learn from their mistakes is the wrong way to go. A punishment should do everything in it’s power to keep people from doing it again. If it doesn’t then it is simply to satisfy your own expectations as a parent. So making sure that these punishments are severe and creative enough to eliminate the bad behavior will keep you having having to come up with those punishments again.

The Dangers of Inappropriate Punishments

As a parent it is your job to make sure you teach your kids the lessons they will need for the rest of their life. They are going to be growing up so quickly and with that in mind you need to prepare them by instilling good values. When your child makes a mistake it’s important to give them corrective action for what they have done. In many cases this is easier said then done. What might appear to be a good punishment on the surface might not be all the effective. If the goal of any good punishment is to deter the child from ever doing it again, then you need to make sure that the punishment does just that. Sometimes what a parent thinks is a good punishment is not always such.

Take a year year old child that is going to preschool. They are pinching children in class. They don’t understand why this is wrong and they don’t even understand that it hurts the other children. They do this learned behavior and they wonder what will happen. When you pick the child up the teacher informs you of your child’s pinching. In one scenario you might go home and send the child to bed early and take away their gaming system for the bad behavior. This might seem like an effective and appropriate punishment to the child but it is anything but. The child will not understand what they have done to deserve this. They won’t respect the punishment to deter them from pinching again. Even a talk with the child might prove to fall on deaf ears.

The most appropriate thing a parent can do is to ask the child to demonstrate a pinch on their arm and then demonstrate a pinch on the childs arm. This is not meant to be aggressive, but instead to inform the child that the pinching isn’t a good feeling and keep them from doing it in the future.
